DVSA Update 16th December: Update on driver and rider services in tier 3

On 14th December the government announced that Greater London and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire will move into tier 3 from 00:01 on Wednesday 16th December.

You can find a full list of which areas are included on GOV.UK.

All practical driving, riding and instructor tests and theory tests can continue in all tiers but with additional safety measures for some tests in Tier 3 areas.

Practical tests

Additional safety measures are in place for vocational testing in Tier 3 areas. These are:

  • All practical driving, instructor tests and theory tests can continue in all tiers
  • Anyone who has a vocational practical test booked in a Tier 3 area who is exempt from wearing a face covering may have to delay their test until the area moves out of tier 3. DVSA will reschedule their test if they cannot find a volunteer driving examiner to conduct their test without them wearing a face covering
  • Vocational lessons can continue in all tiers.

What this means to you and your pupils

DVSA will be emailing everyone in Greater London and affected areas in Essex and Hertfordshire who has a test booked to let them know about the additional measures.

Driving and riding lessons and Driver CPC

Driving, motorcycle and vocational lessons can continue in all tiers.

Driver CPC training can continue in all tiers. DVSA encourages candidates to consider accessing the training remotely or in a social distanced classroom, however where this is not practical in-cab driver CPC training is permissible in all tiers.
