From 10th June 2025, changes to Category B driving licence rules will allow eligible drivers to operate zero emission vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes – a significant increase from the previous 3.5 tonne limit. From this date, no further mandatory training is required to drive electrical or hydrogen powered vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg.
This update, announced by the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), is a vital step toward a more sustainable future in logistics and transport. It enables companies to integrate heavier electric vans and vehicles into their fleets without requiring drivers to hold a different licence category.
To help logistics and transport companies adopt these changes safely and confidently, official guidance has now been released. It is strongly recommended that all Instructors, Assessors, and drivers read this guidance ahead of the rule change.
